La migración irregular ha sido motivo de análisis con relación a sus causas y efectos en los distintos ámbitos en los que afecta a la familia. Se menciona que contribuye con la mejoría de la calidad de vida de las familias que son dejadas en los lugares de donde parte los migrantes guatemaltecos. En esta investigación se presentan resultados de los efectos que han podido experimentar en cuanto a la calidad de vida de los familiares de aquellos que siendo jefes de hogar, han migrado de forma irregular hacia los Estados Unidos, cuando los demás miembros permanecen en el lugar de origen, con relación a aquellas familias que el jefe de la familia permanece en el hogar y que no tienen ningún familiar migrante. Se presentan las condiciones en que se encuentra la aldea, espacio de estudio de esta investigación, la migración irregular y la calidad de vida de las familias. Posteriormente se presentan los resultados de las entrevistas en profundidad realizadas a las esposas de los migrantes irregulares y de los jefes de hogar de las familias que no han migrado de la aldea. Estas entrevistas reflejan las condiciones en que ambas familias se encuentran; las familias con migrantes, con mejoría relativa en cuanto a la vivienda y algunos bienes materiales, pero con separación de los esposos y ausencia para los hijos, en tanto que las otras familias, con ciertas carencias, pero valorando la unidad de la familia en espera de mejoras a futuro, deciden permanecer en el lugar de origen.
Irregular migration has been the subject of analysis in relation to its causes and effects in the different areas in which it affects the family. It is mentioned that it contributes to the improvement of the quality of life of the families that are left in the places where Guatemalan migrants leave. This research presents results of the effects that they have been able to experience regarding the quality of life of the relatives of those who, being heads of household, have migrated irregularly to the United States and the other members remain in the place of origin, in relation to those families that the head of the family remains in the home and who do not have any migrant relatives. It presents the conditions found in the village, study space for this research, irregular migration and the quality of life of families. Subsequently, the results of the in-depth interviews with the wives of irregular migrants and household heads of families who have not migrated from the village are presented. These interviews reflect the conditions in which both families are; families with migrants, with relative improvement in housing and some material goods, but with separation from husbands and absence for children, while the other families, with certain deficiencies but valuing the family unit and with improvements in the future in permanence instead of origin.
