Abstract:

Cucapá people have inhabited for centuries the Colorado River Delta. The Hardy River, effluent of the Colorado River, is part of their territory. Specific degradation processes have been the Hardy River since 1950. Hence, the objective of the research is to “Establish the influence of the degradation of the Hardy River in the livelihoods of the Cucapá El Mayor settlement with a temporal period from the second half of the XX century and the XXI century”. The theoretical framework used was the socio-ecological system theory, the livelihoods approach and the concept of ecosystem degradation. The degradation factors of the Hardy River were identified using bibliographic compilation. Semi-structured interviews and participant observation were used to describe Cucapá´s livelihoods. The 1980´s flood, the sewage drainage since 2007 and the 2010 earthquake were the most important degradation factors of the Hardy River. The tangible repercussions of the river´s degradation are: 1) an impediment to economic development, 2) promotes the competence for economic resources, 3) diminishes the direct source of food, 4) decreases the intrinsic value of the river, 5) minifies the river´s capacity to provide a space for social gathering. The Hardy River remains as an historical reference of the aboriginal relationship that ancestral Cucapá had on it. That reference has transcended beyond the river´s degradation and is the basis on which the El Mayor indigenous identity is build.
