Mexico faces a presidential election in which the former ruling party, the PRI (Partido Revolucionario Institucional), may return to power. This presentation will focus on the main candidates and their campaign dynamics as well as the implications of a PRI win, in the context of the country’s \u00abwar on drugs\u00bb. It will also address the structural factors that have made democratic consolidation and economic reforms difficult to carry out, turning Mexico into a country that seems condemned to sub-par economic performance.<\/span><\/p>\n

In recognition of USD\u2019s former Provost Sister Sally Furay, whose vision for social justice provided the inspiration for creating the Trans-Border Institute on campus, Denise Dresser will deliver the keynote address at the 16th Annual Sister Sally Furay Lecture. \u00a0Ms. Dresser has been named one of the 300 most influential people in Mexico by the magazine \u201cL\u00edderes Mexicanos\u201d and is an award winning journalist, scholar, and one of Mexico\u2019s most renowned political commentators.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n
