Mayra E. Alvarez is the Director of Public Health Policy in the Office of Health Reform at the Department of Health and Human Services, where she has primary oversight responsibility for coordinated and timely implementation of the public health, prevention, and healthcare workforce policy provisions in the Affordable Care Act. She completed her graduate education at the School of Public Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and her undergraduate education at the University of California at Berkeley. Ms. Alvarez served as a Legislative Assistant for Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL), the Majority Whip of the U.S. Senate, where she advised the Senator and helped develop his legislative agenda on health issues. Ms. Alvarez began her work in Washington D.C. as a David A. Winston Health Policy Fellow in the office of then-Senator Barack Obama.<\/p>\n

<\/strong>Rainer Enrique Hamel is a Visiting Scholar at the Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies and a professor of linguistics in the Department of Anthropology, Universidad Aut\u00f3noma Metropolitana (UAM), in Mexico City. He obtained his PhD in Romance Linguistics from the University of Frankfurt in 1988. Professor Hamel specializes in sociolinguistics, applied linguistics, discourse analysis, language policy, bilingualism and bilingual education. Over more than 30 years, he has been doing research on language shift, indigenous bilingual education and language policy in Mexico and in other Latin American countries. He is the Director of CIEIB, the inter-institutional Research Program \u00abIndigenous Community and Bilingual Intercultural Education\u00bb hosted at UAM and the Director of the Permanent Project Networks \u00abLanguage Policy in Latin America\u00bb of ALFAL, the Association of Linguists and Philologists of Latin America.\u00bb<\/p>\n
