15th Berlin Roundtables on Transnationality, March 28 \u2013 31, 2012<\/p>\n
Borders and Borderlands: Contested Spaces
\nSubmission deadline is November 30, 2011.<\/p>\n
The Berlin Roundtables on Transnationality are a conference series
\norganized in cooperation between the Social Science Research Center Berlin
\n(WZB), Humboldt-Universit\u00e4t Berlin, and the Irmgard Coninx Foundation.<\/p>\n
Based on an international essay competition, we will invite approximately
\n45 applicants to discuss their research, concerns and agendas with peers
\nand prominent scholars in Berlin. The competition is open to scholars
\n(max. up to 5 years after Ph.D.), journalists and professionals working on
\nborderlands (e.g. government agencies and NGOs). The Irmgard Coninx
\nFoundation will cover travel to and accommodation in Berlin.<\/p>\n
In the tradition of previous Berlin Roundtables the 15th Berlin
\nRoundtables will focus on borders and borderlands as contested spaces.
\nConference papers can address but are not limited to the following topics:<\/p>\n
– social and cultural life in borderlands
\n– border cities
\n– constructing and undercutting borderland identities
\n– borders in art, literature, and film
\n– historical making and shifting of borders
\n– cultural, political, and economic blending and challenges
\n– legal, political and military border control systems
\n– creation of illegality and legality
\n– changing political, economic and social functions of borders
\n– historical contingency of border regimes
\n– struggle and cooperation over natural resources
\n– borders as a refuge for biodiversity and environmental protection –
\nconflicts over environmental pollution<\/p>\n
Discussions will take place in three workshops chaired by Julie Chu
\n(University of Chicago) and Tatiana Zhurzhenko (University of Vienna),
\nMattias Kumm (Humboldt-Universit\u00e4t Berlin, WZB and New \u00a0York University)
\nand Eric Tagliacozzo (Cornell University), and Michael Redclift (King\u2019s
\nCollege London) and Maria Tysiachniuk (Center for Independent Research St.
\nPetersburg).<\/p>\n
Conference participants are eligible to apply for one of up to three
\nthree-month fellowships to be used for research at in Berlin at the WZB.<\/p>\n
