At the 2010 Latin American Studies Association (LASA) meeting in Toronto,  during the panel on \u00abThe Bicentennial of the Independence Movements,\u00bb a lively  discussion on the nature of Mexican and Latin American Independence and the  Atlantic took place. The seminar will begin with opening remarks by participants  in the LASA panel in Toronto, John Tutino of Georgetown University, and Roberto  Bre\u00f1a of the Colegio de M\u00e9xico, both eminent historians in the field of Mexican  history and especially the Independence period. These remarks will be followed  by a roundtable discussion with Tutino, Bre\u00f1a, and UCSD&#8217;s own Eric Van Young,  one of the world&#8217;s major scholars of Mexican history, the author of <em>The Other  Rebellion<\/em> (Stanford, 2001) on Mexican Independence.
