In 2010, Mexico celebrated the Bicentennial of its Independence, commemorating the critical Independence year, 1810. At the 2010 Latin American Studies Association (LASA) meeting in Toronto, during the panel on \u00abThe Bicentennial of the Independence Movements,\u00bb a lively discussion on the nature of Mexican and Latin American Independence and the Atlantic took place. The seminar will begin with opening remarks by participants in the LASA panel in Toronto, John Tutino of Georgetown University, and Roberto Bre\u00f1a of the Colegio de M\u00e9xico, both eminent historians in the field of Mexican history and especially the Independence period. These remarks will be followed by a roundtable discussion with Tutino, Bre\u00f1a, and UCSD’s own Eric Van Young, one of the world’s major scholars of Mexican history, the author of The Other Rebellion<\/em> (Stanford, 2001) on Mexican Independence. Tutino is author of From Insurrection to Revolution in Mexico<\/em> (Princeton, 1986), and will speak on \u00abThe Americas in a Changing World: Revolutions, Nations, and Capitalism, 1750-1850.\u00bb Bre\u00f1a is author of El primer liberalismo espa\u00f1ol y los procesos de emancipaci\u00f3n de Am\u00e9rica, 1808-1824<\/em> (Colegio de M\u00e9xico, 2006), and will provide a critical perspective on \u00abThe Atlantic Approach and the Spanish American Independence Movements.\u00bb Please join us for this discussion on Mexican Independence and its legacies, between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans.<\/p>\n
