On Fresno&#8217;s main drag, Blackstone Avenue, the glowing neon names of restaurants don&#8217;t bother much with English, and signs like \u00abCentral Valley&#8217;s cerveza\u00bb need no translation.<br><br>If weren&#8217;t for Mexicans, Fresno would never have become a city.\u00a0 In the wake of the violence that engulfed Mexico during its 1910-1920 revolution, tens of thousands fled north across the border.\u00a0 In Fresno they found work in the fields and homes in segregated barrios.\u00a0 Then countless families were pulled off the streets as the Depression deepened, loaded into boxcars and deported.\u00a0 Even U.S. citizens who looked Mexican were picked up and sent down to the border. \u00a0<br><br>Racism and anti-immigrant hysteria were only part of the reason.\u00a0 Fresno in the early &#8217;30s was a city of class upheaval.\u00a0 Thirty-two years before the 1965 grape strike in Delano, Mexicans rose up in an earlier vineyard rebellion &#8211;\u00a0 the 1933 Fresno grape strike opened a labor war that shook California.\u00a0 Strikers lost the battle in Fresno, but their union and its Communist organizers then moved 60 miles south and launched the largest farm labor strike in U.S. history.\u00a0 Forty thousand cotton pickers defied grower vigilantes, despite the murder of three strikers, and won wage raises even in the heart of the Depression.<br><br>Today the street in front of the Azteca Theater is hauntingly empty at night during the pandemic.\u00a0 But the oldest residents of Fresno&#8217;s barrios undoubtedly remembered those earlier conflicts when Cesar Chavez, Larry Itliong, Dolores Huerta and a column of grape strikers stopped in front of the Azteca Theater on F Street in 1966.\u00a0 The strikers were marching from Delano to Sacramento, and hundreds of local farmworkers turned out to hear Chavez speak in the street outside the theater. \u00a0<br><br> <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"author":10,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-26393","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-avisosyconvocatorias"],"acf":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.colef.mx\/elmuro\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/26393"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.colef.mx\/elmuro\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.colef.mx\/elmuro\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.colef.mx\/elmuro\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/10"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.colef.mx\/elmuro\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=26393"}],"version-history":[{"count":2,"href":"https:\/\/www.colef.mx\/elmuro\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/26393\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":26398,"href":"https:\/\/www.colef.mx\/elmuro\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/26393\/revisions\/26398"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.colef.mx\/elmuro\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=26393"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.colef.mx\/elmuro\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=26393"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.colef.mx\/elmuro\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=26393"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
