Abstract:

The interest of this work is approach in theoretical and empirical way the theme of the region from two perspectives: as an imagined space, and as development space. The two notions are correlated if we can understand that the culture experience about the space is essential for a region project, anchored in form of a territorial belonging. The seeing focuses on the inter-subjective construction of symbolic frames to name the space. This goes through a methodology that allows approach the voice of the people of this region, with interviews and metal maps; but also to the institutional voices that builds images of the region and brings symbolic frames to the imagined “us”. This topic recovers importance in countries which begin to define the region as a space of planning and development. That’s the reason why the “Eje Cafetero” in Colombia, a region who traditionally regroups three departments dedicated to the coffee culture and defines today future regional projects, allows to get close to the empirical possibilities of the regional imaginary in terms of development. This document contains five chapters going from an analysis of the parts of the region or its geo-symbols until a reflection about its wholeness. This essay shows the existence of a socio-cultural region, in which survives the memory of the coffee, linked to some new ways of imagining the territory, specially recycled by the industry of tourism and the revalorization of naturals resources.
